Specification Writing Guide: How to Describe Wire Gauge, Mesh, and Finish

Precise language prevents misunderstandings. Here’s how to specify the three most commonly disputed parameters:

Wire Gauge: Always Specify in Millimeters

Factory Insight: “Heavy duty” means nothing. “4.5mm wire” means everything. Different countries use different gauge systems (AWG, SWG, BWG), so millimeters are the only universal standard.

Measurement Method: Use a micrometer to measure wire diameter. Take three measurements per wire sample and average them. Record to 0.1mm precision.

Mesh Spacing: Length × Height Format

Always specify mesh spacing as horizontal spacing × vertical spacing. Our default is 100mm × 40mm. If you need different spacing for specific applications (e.g., smaller mesh for puppies), state both dimensions explicitly.

Surface Finish: Color + Gloss Level + Test Standard

“Black powder coating” is insufficient. Specify:

• Color: Black is default. For custom colors, provide Pantone code or physical sample.
• Gloss level: Glossy (80+ gloss units), Semi-gloss (40-60), or Matte (10-20).
• Corrosion resistance: Salt spray test hours (default 48h, premium 96h).

1. Photos: Minimum 6 angles of the approved sample, with close-ups of critical details (latch, welds, logo placement).
2. Measurements: Actual measured dimensions, wire gauges, and weights—not just target specs.
3. Color reference: Physical color chip attached or Pantone code with gloss level noted.
4. Material samples: Small piece of wire and coating chip if color matching is critical.
5. Signature block: Both parties sign with date, stating “Mass production must match this approved sample.”
