Dog Crate Packaging Cost: Standard vs Custom — What You Actually Pay

A buyer once asked for custom color boxes on a 300-unit order. We told him: the printing plate costs more than the boxes themselves at that quantity. Wait until you’re ordering 2,000 units — that’s when custom packaging makes financial sense.

At our factory, most buyers don’t need custom packaging. The standard neutral carton works fine — it protects the crate, it’s cheap, and the MOQ is almost zero. But if you’re selling on Amazon or to a retail chain, different rules apply.

Common Pitfalls When Ordering Packaging

  • Pitfall 1: Ordering custom color boxes for a first order. You don’t know if the SKU will sell. Use neutral boxes for the first batch. Switch to custom on the reorder once the market is proven.
  • Pitfall 2: Forgetting the plate fee. Custom color boxes require a printing plate. This is a one-time cost on your first order. On a 2,000-unit order, it’s negligible. On 500 units, it hurts.
  • Pitfall 3: Ordering more custom boxes than you’ll use. The MOQ for custom boxes is 2,000. If you only sell 800 units, you’ve paid for 1,200 boxes you’ll never use. The per-unit cost doubles.

Standard Packaging: What’s Included and What It Costs

Every crate we ship comes with standard packaging. No special request needed. No MOQ. Here’s what you get:

Standard packaging per crate:

  • Neutral brown carton (single-wall corrugated)
  • PE bag for dust and moisture protection
  • Basic foam corner protection
  • Assembly instructions (English)

The cost depends on the crate size:

Crate Size Carton Dimensions (mm) Standard Packaging Cost (¥)
24-inch 640×100×477 ~¥8
30-inch 795×100×510 ~¥9
36-inch 940×100×600 ~¥11
42-inch 1085×100×720 ~¥13
48-inch 1255×100×780 ~¥15

Standard packaging MOQ: 200-300 units. Since we ship these sizes regularly, the cartons are always in stock. You don’t need to order a separate batch of boxes.

Custom Packaging: When It’s Worth the Extra Cost

Custom packaging means your brand on the box — logo, product photos, color design. It matters for two types of buyers: Amazon FBA sellers who need branded packaging, and retailers who require shelf-ready boxes.

Standard neutral cartons for wire dog crates - dog crate packaging cost

Here’s what changes with custom:

Item Standard Custom (Color Box)
Carton type Neutral brown Full-color printed
Cost per unit ¥8-15 +10-20% more
MOQ 200-300 units 2,000 units
Setup cost None Printing plate fee (one-time)
Lead time In stock +7-10 days for plate production

The 2,000-unit MOQ comes from the printing plate requirement. Below 2,000 units, the plate fee per unit is too high to make sense. At 2,000 units, the plate fee amortizes to a reasonable per-unit cost.

If you’re testing a new market, start with standard packaging. Once you’ve proven the SKU sells, switch to custom on the reorder.

Reinforced Cartons: When Standard Isn’t Enough

Standard single-wall cartons work for almost every shipment. But if you’re shipping extra-heavy crates, long-distance sea freight through humid routes, or crates that will sit in a warehouse for months — you might want reinforced cartons.

Reinforced carton details:

  • MOQ: 500 units
  • Available in double-wall or extra-thick single-wall board
  • Higher compression resistance for long stacking or humid conditions

In our experience, less than 5% of buyers need reinforced cartons. Standard cartons with proper stacking direction (see Blog 38) handle the rest.

Side-by-Side Cost Comparison

Assume a 42-inch crate order of 500 units:

Packaging Type Per-Unit Cost (¥) Total for 500 Units MOQ Notes
Standard neutral ¥13 ¥6,500 200-300 In stock, no setup
Custom color box ~¥15 ¥7,500 + plate fee 2,000 Not viable at 500 units
Reinforced carton ~¥14 ¥7,000 500 Viable at exactly 500

The key insight: at 500 units, custom color boxes don’t make financial sense. The 2,000-unit MOQ means you’d pay for 1,500 boxes you won’t use, or you’d need to store them. Standard or reinforced are the practical choices at this volume.

How to Ask Your Supplier About Packaging

When you email us about packaging, don’t just say “I need custom packaging.” Send this instead:

I'm ordering [quantity] units of [size] crates.

Three questions on packaging:
1. Standard neutral carton: unit cost + MOQ?
2. Custom color box: unit cost + MOQ + plate fee?
3. Reinforced carton: unit cost + MOQ?

My target market is [Amazon / retail / wholesale].

This gives us everything we need to quote the right option. Three lines, three numbers, no back-and-forth.

Hidden Costs to Budget For

Three costs buyers often miss:

1. Printing plate fee (custom color boxes only). One-time charge on your first order. Amortizes well at 2,000+ units. Hurts at lower quantities.

2. Unused carton waste. If you order 2,000 custom boxes but only use 1,200, the remaining 800 are sunk cost. Your real per-unit cost goes up.

3. Design revision fees. If your designer sends three rounds of artwork changes, each round may incur a revision charge from the printing house. Confirm the design before submitting.

Packaging Decision Framework

📦

Standard Neutral: Start Here

¥8-15/unit. MOQ 200-300. In stock. No setup. Best for first orders and wholesale.

🎨

Custom Color Box: Amazon & Retail

+10-20% over standard. MOQ 2,000. + plate fee. Worth it for proven SKUs.

🛡️

Reinforced: Heavy or Long-Haul

MOQ 500. Double-wall or extra-thick board. Needed for <5% of shipments.

💡

Test First, Upgrade Later

Use standard packaging for the first order. Switch to custom on the reorder once you know the SKU sells.

What is the standard packaging cost per dog crate?

¥8-15 per unit, depending on crate size. 24-inch crates cost about ¥8, 48-inch crates about ¥15. This includes a neutral brown carton, PE bag, foam corner protection, and assembly instructions.

Should I choose standard or custom packaging?

Start with standard for your first order — it’s cheaper, has almost no MOQ, and lets you test the market. Switch to custom color boxes on the reorder if you’re selling on Amazon or to retail. Custom costs 10-20% more with a 2,000-unit MOQ.

What is the MOQ for custom color boxes?

2,000 units. This comes from the printing plate requirement — below 2,000 units, the plate fee per unit is too high to be practical. For smaller quantities, standard neutral cartons are the better option.

Can I get reinforced cartons for heavy crates?

Yes. Reinforced cartons (double-wall or extra-thick board) have a 500-unit MOQ. They’re needed for less than 5% of shipments — standard cartons with proper stacking handle the rest.

How do I ask my supplier about packaging options?

Send three specific questions: standard cost + MOQ, custom cost + MOQ + plate fee, and reinforced cost + MOQ. Also mention your target market (Amazon, retail, or wholesale). This gets you an accurate quote in one email.

What hidden costs should I budget for?

Three things: the printing plate fee for custom boxes (one-time, first order), unused carton waste if your MOQ exceeds your sales, and design revision fees if your artwork changes multiple times.
